Are there other cannabinoids in our CBN oil?
There are trace amounts of the minor cannabinoids such as CBC, CBG and even a little CBD in our oil. This is a good thing! Cannabinoids, when consumed together, exhibit something called the "entourage effect" and these combinations act together to enhance the overall therapeutic effect.
What's the Difference: CBN vs CBD Oil
Both CBN and CBD are a hemp extract of the cannabis sativa plant with many potential benefits. The cannabis sativa plant has many cannabinoids, over 100 compounds, many of which we haven't researched as yet. CBD and THC are considered to be major cannabinoids where CBN is considered to be a minor cannabinoid based on relative amounts found in the plant.
While cannabidiol (CBD) has been most popular and received more research in the recent past, cannabinol (CBN) is not far behind. Both compounds interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) but have different effects. The CBD compound has no psychoactive effects like THC; however, CBN is a breakdown product of THC and has some psychoactive properties although it's only 25% the strength of THC. It initially became popular as a way to plant - the higher the CBN, the older the plant. And then we realized that CBN has some unique properties of its own!
How does the endocannabinoid system work?
The endocannabinoid system is found in all mammals and composed of cannabinoid receptors, modulatory enzymes and cannabinoids that are produced by the body (endocannabinoids). These receptors, called H1 and H2 receptors, are found primarily in the central and peripheral nervous system and can be influenced by exogenous cannabinoids such as THC and CBN as they have a similar shape as endocannabinoids and can interact with receptors to varying degrees.
The ECS has been shown to regulate/control our immune system, learning and memory, pain management, sleep and even digestion. While CBD is a cannabinoid it does not interact directly with the receptors. Instead, it is thought that of endocannabinoids and enhancing their effect.
Effects of CBN
CBN has many health benefits, some that are similar to CBD and others that are unique to cannabinol.
-
CBN is best known for its sedating properties. The most shows that CBN, when combined with CBD and CBC, is as effective as melatonin as a sleep aid without the morning grogginess.
-
Anti inflammatory properties: Much like CBD, CBN has been shown to have anti inflammatory properties by known to cause chronic and acute inflammation. While most of these studies have been in animal models we are hopeful that they translate to humans as well.
-
Pain relief: CBN, particularly when combined with THC and other cannabinoids, has been shown to have peripheral analgesics and may be used to alleviate chronic and topical pain. In a 2019 study using a rat model, CBD and CBN used in conjunction were effective in relieving myofascial pain associated with TMJ disorders and fibromyalgia. For people who suffer from these disorders this combination could be invaluable as treatment
These are only a few of the most prominent known effects of CBN and research is still in the early stages. As we conduct more research we find more health benefits related to the cannabis plant.
CBN Oil or CBD Oil for Sleep?
CBN oil may be taken alone; however, all of the cannabinoids work best when taken in conjunction with other cannabinoids. CBN has been shown to be useful in promoting deep sleep and helping people stay asleep without the aftereffects of other medications such as morning lethargy.
CBD oil may be useful as a sleep aid when taken alone; however, scientific research has shown that the two compounds when taken together exhibit a synergistic effect further enhancing the effects of both. Therefore, for the most restful sleep you should consider taking a combination of the two.
What's the best way to take CBN?
Using a sublingual tincture will provide the most rapid and highest rate of absorption directly into the bloodstream with effects lasting several hours. Placing a tincture under your tongue and holding it there for at least 20 seconds (longer if possible) will allow rapid absorption.
Ingesting gummies or food with CBN will take longer to take effect as it has to pass through the digestive tract and be absorbed in the intestine. This will result in lower bioavailability due to first pass metabolism through the liver although the effects may also last several hours.
Will CBN oil trigger a positive drug test?
CBN can produce a positive urinalysis for THC as the molecule is similar (since it is a breakdown product) although it will depend upon the sensitivity of the test as well as how much and how long you've been taking CBN. CBN normally stays in the human body for 2 to 5 days but this is dependent upon a number of factors such as your weight, body fat, age, etc. It's safe to say you should be aware of the possibility of a positive drug test for marijuana if you are taking CBN and prepare accordingly.
How much CBN should I take as a sleep aid?
Using a water soluble tincture 30-60 minutes before bedtime with a starting dose of 5 mg and adjusting upward to 10 mg should be effective. Be sure to hold the tincture under your tongue for at least 20 seconds. If you choose to combine CBN with CBD you may notice an enhanced effect so your dose should be altered accordingly.
How long does the effect of CBN oil last?
When taken sublingually you can expect the effects of CBN to last approximately 4-6 hours and may kick in within 30 minutes so plan to take it within an hour of bedtime.
If you are ingesting CBN with food or gummies you'll have more time before you feel the effects and likely will experience a more subtle effect that will last 2-4 hours.
What's the best way to store CBN oil?
Store your CBN product at room temperature and, as with most medications, it's best to avoid direct sunlight. Make sure you avoid exposure to the air as this may decrease the therapeutic potential benefits of CBN. Shaking the bottle before each use will ensure equal distribution of the product.
